March 2, 2001 - 202nd Anniversary
of the
First Weights and Measures Law

WHEREAS, on March 2, 1799, the Congress of the United States of America enacted its first Weights and Measures law citing the necessity of standards of weights and measures; and

WHEREAS, Weights and Measures Week is being recognized during March 1 through 7, 2001 throughout the United States; and

WHEREAS, the Department of Weights and Measures provides an important service to the community ensuring consumer confidence in the marketplace, promoting fair competition among businesses and ensuring a strong national economy; and

WHEREAS, the Department of Weights and Measures, in addition to being concerned how products being sold by weight or measure are represented and advertised, the weights and measures officials are responsible for testing many different types of devices to ensure their accuracy, such as scales, gas pumps, meters used for home fuel oil deliveries, price scanning equipment, milk meters, wire and cordage measuring devices, highway truck scales, fabric measuring devices, and many more;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Chosen Freeholders of the County of Hunterdon does hereby recognize the County's Department of Weights and Measures and its Director, William Yancey, on the 202nd Anniversary of the first Weights and Measures law; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Hunterdon County Board of Chosen Freeholders recognizes the valuable contribution to the economic welfare of the County's residents and businesses through the work performed by the County's Department of Weights and Measures.
