MIND YOUR MIND FOR HEALTHIER EATING: Have you ever eaten when you were not hungry? Eaten in front of a screen such as a TV or computer without being aware of your meal? Have you ever over-eaten due to an emotional state such as excitement or stress? All of these are examples of “mindless eating”. But what does it mean to be mindful when we eat?
Mindfulness is a conscious awareness focusing on the present moment and state of the mind, body, and soul. Why is it important it be mindful when we eat? Mindfulness allows us to listen to our body’s hunger and fullness cues, to taste and truly enjoy our food, create a sense of balance, and develop wisdom about ourselves and our eating behaviors. Mindful eating can help control cravings, prevent overeating, and aid in properly nourishing our bodies.
Mindful eating isn’t something that happens over a day or two. It takes time, practice and effort. However, with enough determination, mindful eating can become second nature; an everyday occurrence at every meal. The art of mindfulness can positively alter not only eating habits, but other aspects in life such as stress management.
