September as Ridesharing Month

WHEREAS, commuters in New Jersey are finding it harder and harder to get to work on time as the result of competition for space on the available roadways; and

WHEREAS, traffic congestion along Hunterdon County highway corridors is expected to increase by an

WHEREAS, tthe quality of the air in Hunterdon County is being seriously lowered through carbon monoxide and other pollutants that arise from heavy motor vehicle traffic, resulting in a less than desirable lifestyle for all Hunterdon County and New Jersey residents and the deterioration of the environment of the Garden State; and average of 25% over the next twenty years; and

WHEREAS, the maintenance and upgrading of New Jersey’s infrastructure of highways is consuming more and more resources, plus insatiable demands for new roadways are seriously draining our shrinking open space;

WHEREAS, ridesharing or the use of traditional bus and rail public transit are concepts whose time has come if we are to continue to enjoy the amenities that make New Jersey an attractive state in which to live and earn a livelihood -- concepts that can use existing means of public transportation such as rail and bus lines, as well as better deploying private means through the use of car or vanpools;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED, that the Board of Chosen Freeholders of the County of Hunterdon does hereby in the County of Hunterdon, designate the month of September, 2002 as RIDESHARING MONTH and encourages commuters to seek alternatives to the private car.
