PROCLAMATION
25th Anniversary
of the
Hunterdon County Communications System

WHEREAS, on April 28, 1975 the concept of a County Communications System began with the appointment of its first Director and grant funds provided through the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the State Law Enforcement Planning Agency (SLEPA), and the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs; and

WHEREAS, these grants funds allowed for the purchase of radios and equipment to replace those in the municipal police departments and volunteer emergency medical service agencies that were on different frequencies, bringing communications under one dispatch; and

WHEREAS, the 9-1-1 Hunterdon County Communications System officially went on the air on June 23, 1976 and on February 1, 1977 the County of Hunterdon became the first county-wide agency to have 9-1-1 in the State of New Jersey, and was the only agency handling all emergency calls through one central communications center; and

WHEREAS, the Board of Chosen Freeholders of the County of Hunterdon created the Emergency Management Council in 1986 for the purpose of developing an emergency operations plan to address major emergency situations affecting Hunterdon County; and

WHEREAS, the Hunterdon County Department of Emergency Services was created in 1999 as a move to consolidate the Public Safety services provided by the County and consists of the merging of the County Communications System (9-1-1), the Office of the Fire Marshal, the Office of Emergency Management and the Emergency Services Training Center; and

WHEREAS, the mission of Hunterdon County's Department of Emergency Services is to provide a wide range of preventative and emergency services aimed at maintaining the quality of life for the general public;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Chosen Freeholders of the County of Hunterdon hereby recognizing the 25th Anniversary of the Hunterdon County Communications System to be celebrated on July 14, 2001; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Board of Chosen Freeholders of the County of Hunterdon extends its sincere appreciation to the dedicated employees of the Office of Emergency Services who handle life threatening calls with much expertise, composure and efficiency; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Clerk of the Board is hereby directed to cause this Proclamation to be spread upon the official minutes of the County of Hunterdon.
