PROCLAMATION

BIKE TO WORK DAY - Friday, May 21, 2004
TRAFFIC BUSTER DAY - Tuesday, June 15, 2004


WHEREAS, commuters in Hunterdon County are finding it harder to get to work on time as the result of competition for space on the available roadways; and

WHEREAS, traffic congestion along Hunterdon County roadways is projected to increase over time; and

WHEREAS, the quality of air in Hunterdon County is being seriously lowered through carbon monoxide and other pollutants that arise from heavy motor vehicle traffic, resulting in the less than desirable lifestyle for all Hunterdon County; and

WHEREAS, the maintenance and upgrading of Hunterdon County’s infrastructure is consuming more and more resources, and demands for new and or expanded roadways are seriously shrinking open space; and

WHEREAS, carpooling, vanpooling, bicycling, and the use of traditional bus and rail public transit are concepts whose time have come if we are to continue to enjoy the amenities that make Hunterdon County an attractive place in which to live and earn a livelihood; and

WHEREAS, Hunterdon Area Rural Transit (HART) Community Information Services is the transportation management association serving Hunterdon County; and

WHEREAS, HART’s mission is to educate the commuting public on alternatives to single occupancy vehicle travel, facilitate the creation of carpools and vanpools, and advocate for travel demand management; and

WHEREAS, Hunterdon Area Rural Transit has focused specific efforts to promote alternative commute modes; and

WHEREAS, specific targeted promotions can encourage commuters to change their commute, even temporarily; and

WHEREAS, Hunterdon Area Rural Transit has identified days in May and June and developed two such promotions;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Chosen Freeholders of the County of Hunterdon does hereby proclaim Friday, May 21, 2004, as “BIKE TO WORK DAY” in the County to encourage commuters to bike to work or to public transit in favor of their automobile and Tuesday, June 15, 2004 as “TRAFFIC BUSTER DAY” to encourage commuters to carpool to Hunterdon County worksites; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Hunterdon County Board of Chosen Freeholders encourages its employees, with assistance from Hunterdon Area Rural Transit, to provide information on alternative commute options, including carpooling and bicycling, to their employees and to support employees in their alternative commute efforts so as to alleviate traffic congestion and improve air quality in Hunterdon County.
