PROCLAMATION
March, 2001 Mental Retardation Awareness Month

WHEREAS, the County of Hunterdon has a long history of providing services and opportunities for people with mental retardation through the public and private sectors; and

WHEREAS, people with mental retardation have become integrated into Hunterdon County's communities and workplaces. Through group homes and employment programs, people with mental retardation are becoming more independent and better able to live and work along with other residents of this state; and

WHEREAS, Hunterdon County has a strong tradition of citizen involvement; particularly among the families of people with mental retardation. Non-profit organizations, run by family members and volunteers, now provide most of the services for people with developmental disabilities; and

WHEREAS, by providing services which empower people with mental retardation, the County of Hunterdon has allowed many individuals with mental retardation to live fuller, more productive lives and to become taxpaying citizens; and

WHEREAS, Hunterdon County is a leader in the state in the level of cooperation between business and to bring more people with disabilities into the county's workforce, with greater personal and economic opportunity; and

WHEREAS, Hunterdon County excels in providing safe, high-quality services for individuals with disabilities and their families.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Board of Chosen Freeholders of the County of Hunterdon that the month of March, 2001, be hereby recognized as Mental Retardation Awareness Month, in Hunterdon County; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Hunterdon County Board of Chosen Freeholders urges the residents of Hunterdon County to learn more about their neighbors and co-workers with mental retardation; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that March, 2001 shall be a month in which everyone recognizes the abilities of people with mental retardation rather then their disabilities.
