Sheriff Deborah Trout has been a resident of Delaware Township, Hunterdon County for over twenty-five years, where she lives with her husband Dave. Her son David attended Delaware Township schools and graduated from Hunterdon Central in 1997. As a mom, Deborah was very active locally with programs such as the PTA, Cub Scouts, Little League and the Delaware Township Recreation Committee. Sheriff Trout graduated from Glassboro State College (now Rowan University) in 1973 and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Special Education. She taught for approximately ten years and co-authored a teaching curriculum for neurologically-impaired students, which later became the accepted State of New Jersey teaching guidelines. She hopes to continue pursuing her Master’s degree in Criminal Justice. The Sheriff began working for the Hunterdon County Sheriff’s Office in 1987 in a clerical position. She eventually became secretary and confidential aide to both Sheriffs Warren Peterson and James Marino. In 1993, she took the civil service test for law enforcement officers. In 1994, she was sworn in as a Sheriff’s Officer for Hunterdon County. At the age of forty-three, Deborah attended the Trenton Police Academy from which she graduated with high honors in academic excellence. Over the intervening years, she has attended many in-service training classes and seminars, and has been assisting both Trenton and Mercer County police academies with their recruit classes as an adjunct instructor. Sheriff Trout served as a Sheriff’s Officer in Hunterdon County until April 2003, when she completed a lateral transfer to the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office. She continued employment there until taking office as Hunterdon County Sheriff in January, 2008. During her twenty-plus years as a of member of the Sheriff’s Office, Deborah has been involved in and/or helped establish many community service programs such as the Sheriff’s countywide Family Drug Awareness Day, Sheriff’s Law Enforcement Explorers, the Sheriff’s Child ID and Seniors ID programs, the Drunk Driving Simulator Program, D.A.R.E., and the Gypsy Crime Awareness Program. Sheriff Trout is hopeful of continuing and/or restarting most, if not all, of these valuable low-cost or no-cost programs, along with several new ones for the benefit of all families and residents of Hunterdon County.
