The Hunterdon County Healthy Communities Initiative:
A Partnership for Health is represented by Hunterdon Medical Center, the Hunterdon County Department of Health, and over 40 concerned community service providers, who are working together to help the Hunterdon community be the healthiest it can be!

PARTNERSHIP EDUCATING EDUCATORS
Sandra Grenci, Family & Community Health Sciences educator with Rutger's Cooperative Extension of Hunterdon County, and Beverley Manganelli, Manager of Community Nutrition Services of the Hunterdon Healthcare System, http://www.hunterdonhealthcare.org joined Rose Mehrlust, Practice Standards Partnership Coordinator in a panel presentation for over 75 members of the Society of Health Educators (SOPHE) in June.
The event took place at Maggianos in Somerville. Rose spoke about the activities of the Hunterdon Partnership for Health and ways for health educators to involve themselves in the MAPP process. Sandra and Beverley presented the work of their action team -Weight/Physical Activity. They highlighted the success of the Eat Out/Eat Smart Restaurant Program and "Fitness Without Walls"

OBESITY IN HUNTERDON
Experts in nutrition and weight issues hit the airwaves of WDVR 89.7FM to share insights about the health challenge of obesity in Hunterdon. Sandra Grenci (left), Family & Community Health Sciences educator with Rutger’s Cooperative Extension of Hunterdon County, was joined by Beverley Manganelli (right), manager of Community Nutrition Services of the Hunterdon Healthcare System, on the station’s “World of Work” show. |

FROM THE HEART, ABOUT THE HEART
Lisamarie Buckley (left), MS, RN, director of the Cardio Pulmonary Rehab and Cardiovascular Action Team chair for the Partnership for Health, and Marianne McEvoy (right), RN, director of the Public Health Nursing & Education division of the county health department used the power of radio to talk to residents about heart health. This cardiovascular program is one of a continuous series of health shows featured on WDVR-89.7FM.

 WINNING IMAGE OF MENTAL HEALTH
Using art to educate the public about mental health issues, a poster contest was sponsored by the Partnership for Health Mental Health action team. Displaying the winning artwork are (left to right) Cathy Zahn, Department of Human Services; Senator Leonard Lance; Nancy Brown, Consumer Advocate and member of the mental health board; and Larry Cartwright, President of National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Hunterdon Chapter.
Senator Lance helped judge the competition held at Hunterdon Behavioral Health in Hunterdon Medical
Center. NAMI awarded first place $300, second place $200, and third place $100. Contest posters will be on display May 1 at the Mental Health Forum in the
County Complex on Rt. 12 and at other venues throughout the county. |

HEAR HEALTHY HEART NEWS ON CN8 NEWSMAKERS
With February being National Heart Health Month, Terry Shlimbaum, MD, and medical director of
Phillips-Barber Family Health Center, was featured on Comcast network’s CN8 Newsmakers. Dr. Shlimbaum (right) joined Comcast host Autumn Marisa (left) to share his expertise about cardiovascular disease, its impact on quality of life and how to improve heart health by “knowing your numbers.” This refers to your blood pressure, your cholesterol levels, and other factors that indicate how at risk you may be of experiencing heart disease. Preparing a sign campaign to launch a brand new substance abuse web site is Karen Widico (left), MSW, CPS, Executive Director of Hunterdon Prevention Resources, and Jane Butula (right) of Readington Township Board of Health. Karen and Jane are instrumental in ensuring that word is spread about the website that -- with the click of a mouse -- quickly delivers information about the many resources available for Hunterdon residents looking for guidance on substance abuse. |
