PUBLIC HEALTH NURSE OF THE YEAR

Shu Chen Chiang, BSN, RN with the Hunterdon County Department of Health was awarded “Public Health Nurse of the Year” by the New Jersey Association of Public Health Nurse Administrators (NJAPHNA). Shu was selected based on her expertise in the clinical nursing practice of public health and as a visionary, leader, teacher and role model.

“Intelligent, capable and a true team player” says Marianne McEvoy, RN and director of the Public Health Nursing & Education division of the county health department when asked to describe Shu. On any given day as a public health nurse with the county health department, Shu will traverse the area, making personal home visits to assess a child for lead poisoning or to ensure that a tuberculosis patient stays with his treatment regime by observing his medication intake; or visiting private-, public- and pre-school sites to work directly with school nurses on immunization audits to reduce the risk for spread of preventable diseases. All in a day’s work for a nurse of the year.
