Taking the message of sun safety to a new level is Maisy Weiss, 12, of Annandale, who created this art piece as a sixth grade assignment at Round Valley Middle school, Lebanon. Click here for more about this award-winning poster and how you can help by voting for it in national competition.

Round Valley sixth graders were asked to design a poster advertising sun care with the only criteria being it had to present 5 of 7 sun safety tips. Maisy’s poster, "Nothing Fishy About Sun Safety," is the winner for the State of New Jersey in the Shade Foundation of America annual art competition.  Besides helping others understand the need to be aware of the dangers of the sun, Maisy won a $500 shade grant for her school and a $250 savings bond for herself.

The poster now is competing at both the regional and nation level.  If Maisy’s artwork wins, it means up to $7,500 for her school and a trip to Disney World for herself. To win, the poster has to score the most online votes during the month of July.  Want to help:  Cast your vote at http://www.shadefoundation.org/; click “vote” and then click “picture number 19.”

The Shade Foundation of America is a non profit organization dedicated to eradicating melanoma through the education of children and the community in the prevention and detection of skin cancer and the promotion of sun safety.
