LYME EDUCATION ACTIVITY SUGGESTIONS: Below are a few activity suggestions for Lyme Disease Education, depending on the age of your students:

  • To convey size of ticks: Bring in bagel with poppy seeds ('nymphal ticks') to sprinkle into each child's hand; sesame seeds will show the size of adult ticks
  • To demonstrate proper tick removal: A styrofoam 'tick' (made with an oval Styrofoam egg, sliced in half and colored black, with black pipe cleaners as legs) and tongs. Have students show proper removal of tick.
  • Have four or five volunteers come up to the front of the class, and have remaining students how well they are dressed for 'tick safety' and why (Note things like color of pants, shorts vs. pants, sandals vs. closed shoes, light socks, etc.) Remaining students can explain why clothing is good or bad.
  • See the Tick Word Find (Acrobat Reader file). This can be re-created on large flip chart for two teams to race to find a called out word; or, each team member can state something (or in a 'Jeopardy -type" question format) about the word called out before the member runs to circle it.
