DIVISION OF ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH

Based at the Route 12 County Complex just outside Flemington, the Department's staff of Registered Environmental Health Specialists and Public Health Investigators coordinate the various environmental health programs sponsored by the Hunterdon County Health Department.

ON-SITE SEPTIC DISPOSAL SYSTEMS

The county health department hosted a septic system technology conference recently to enable information sharing among industry, government and business representatives.

More than 100 attendees, comprising excavators, contractors, real estate agents, members of local boards of health, and county residents, got first-hand explanations about new system technologies, local governmental regulations and state initiatives to address the emerging science.

Mr. Miller Leads and in-depth discussion about Peat Biofilter Treatment Systems and explains technical aspects of current guidelines for emerging technologies.

WELL SYSTEMS: The Private Well Testing Act, which went into effective September 14, 2002, requires private well water supplies to be tested and results disclosed to buyers and sellers PRIOR To transfer of title. Water tests must be a provision in contracts of sale. Both buyers and sellers must certify in writing.

POTABLE WATER INSPECTIONS: Potable Water Inspections are done in accordance with the Safe Drinking Water Act. Includes inspections of the following:

Surface Water and Ground Water Pollution Investigations - with selected sampling/testing as necessary.

SOLID WASTE FLOW ENFORCEMENT:

The Department of Health provides Solid WAste Flow Enforcement which includes investigation of illegal dumping, solid waste facility inspections, hauler inspections, shopping center spot checks and recycling surveys.

PUBLIC HEALTH NUISANCE INVESTIGATIONS:

Such investigations include noise and air pollution complaint investigations, open burning complaints and several nuisance complaints.

HAZARDOUS MATERIALS INCIDENT RESPONSE:

The Department of Health operates a Hazardous Materials Incident Response Team which is allows 24 hours "on-call" response capability for incidents involving any hazardous substance discharged to the environment. LEAD POISONING INVESTIGATIONS:

The Department of Health works with Public Health Nursing and Education to investigate incidents of childhood lead poisoning.

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH:

The Department of Health conducts complaint investigations made regarding occupational health concerns.

RADON TESTING:

The Department of Health provides information, consultation, distribution of educational materials. Radon canisters are available for purchase at the health department. The cost is $20.00, which includes the analysis. you must pay by check.

FACILITIY INSPECTIONS

Facility Inspections are done on various facilities, including Recreation Bathing Facilities, Youth Camps, Kennel/Pet Shops, Gas Stations; Dry cleaners, Establishments with Boilers and Generators.
