H1N1 (SWINE) FLU

SEASONAL FLU
This kind of flu is also known as H1N1. This is the flu that is causing the pandemic. "Swine flu" evolved from a flu virus in pigs. Swine flu appears to be most threatening to pregnant women, young children, young adults, and adults with underlying chronic health conditions. Studies indicate that the risk of serious illness from swine flu in persons age 65 and older is less then the risk for younger aged groups.

It's important to understand that getting a seasonal flu vaccination won't protect you against the swine flu. You need a separate swine flu shot for that protection. Swine flu vaccine will be offered later in October and after. See additional seasonal flu information to the right.

H1N1 RADIO REPORT Public Health Preparedness division director Rose Puelle (left) was featured recently on WDVR-89.7FM to update area residents about the wide scope of preparations now being made as the county looks ahead to this year’s influenza season. Also guest-starring on the radio show was county epidemiologist Karen Alelis (right) who reported on the comprehensive investigation processes the health team applies to identify, track and contain disease when it invades our community.

This is the "regular" flu that we're all used to, the one that circulates every winter. The yearly flu shot you get is designed to protect you against this “seasonal flu.”  This kind of flu poses the greatest health threat to ages 65 and over, pregnant women, and also the very young, and middle-aged people with special chronic health conditions. A large majority of people go to their personal physician for their seasonal flu shot.

It's very important to understand that the seasonal flu shot you get won't protect you against the swine flu. You'll need a separate swine flu vaccine for that. Swine flu vaccines will be offered later in October and after. See additional swine flu information to your left.

SEASONAL FLU CLINICS:

The county is not planning any additional seasonal flu clinics.  Additional vaccine is expected to be shipped to  some private medical providers.  Please contact your physician for information. There may also be seasonal flu shots available at retail outlets (such as local drug stores).
