Mine Brook.  The sedimentary bedrock seen in Mine Brook is known as argillite and is found primarily in west central New Jersey.  Formed over 150 million years ago, the characteristics of this blue-gray rock include high density, extreme hardness, and ability to break easily.  Argillite was used extensively in the construction of the rock walls on the Uplands farm.
