Japanese Barberry (Berberis thunbergii).  This is an invasive plant from Japan that is still planted in many gardens.  Although it is deer resistant, it is an aggressive plant that outcomes natives for space in the soil.  The leaves turn orange to red in the fall, and in the spring it blooms with yellow flowers.  It produces oval fruit that hangs down from the spiky branches.
