Sourland Mountain Nature Preserve
back Hickory Horned Devil Moth

Regal Moth (Citheronia regalis).  This moth has fallen prey to the food chain surrounding all creatures on earth.  It will provide food for other insects, so they can grow and mature, before they become food for other creatures.  As the moth decomposes, it will restore needed nutrients into the soil, another useful purpose.  The caterpillars of this species are called Hickory Horned Devils, as they are green, grow up to 6 inches long, and have huge orange horns near their heads (although they are harmless).
