Great Spangled Fritillary (Speyeria cybele) on Milkweed plant. The Great Spangled Fritillary is one of the easier recognized summer butterflies with its large size and bright coloring. Females will be much larger and darker than their male counterpart. They enjoy open fields, roadsides, and meadows which have moist, rich soil. Their major foodplant is Violets (Glassberg 50).
