Nest of Bald-faced Hornet (Dolichovespula maculata). The gray paper textured ball attached to the tree over the water is a Bald-faced Hornet’s nest. “The paper-like nests are made of chewed wood fiber mixed with saliva” (Donald Lewis) and “one nest may hold up to 700 hornets” (FCPS). The nests also make a good shelter for spiders and other insects in the winter (FCPS). Only the queen survives the winter, and in the spring she begins a new nest. | |||
