back to index WOOD PECKER HOLES back to index

Sapsucker holes.  The lines in this tree were made by a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, a woodpecker that creates horizontal rows of holes to drink tree sap and also to eat the insects that are attracted to the sap.  These woodpeckers spend their winters here in Hunterdon County south through Mexico and their summers further north.
