Tree's root system. A tree's root system plays an important role in maintaining the banks along streams.  The roots retain the soil and limit the effects of erosion as the stream attempts to cut into the bank.  The exposed roots also provide wildlife with a place to seek shelter from predators and a place to hibernate through winter.
