Charcoal Landing.  Charcoal Landings can be found along the Ridge Trail.  These flat areas were created when colliers (charcoal makers) from the paper mill stacked timber in a pyramid formation to release intense heat for charcoal.  Since some of the same sites were constantly used over the years, it is not unusual for some of the landings to be several feet thick.
