back Jewel Weed Next

Jewelweed or Pale Touch-me-not (Impatiens pallida).  Jewelweed can either have a yellow flower, like the one above, or an orange spotted flower (another species called Spotted Touch-me-not).  This plant is a well-known folk remedy for poison ivy.  The stem is crushed to extract the juice, which is then applied to the area affected by the poison ivy, or a poultice of the crushed leaves is applied (NCNatural 2003).  The fruit is a plump green pod that explodes when it is ripe, hence the touch-me-not name.
