back to index american elm leaf back to index

American Elm Leaf (Ulmus americana). The American Elm leaf is alternate, 3 to 6 inches long, and 1 to 3 inches wide. The margin is coarsely and sharply doubly serrated and the base of the leaf is conspicuously inequilateral. The upper surface is glabrous or slightly scabrous, but paler and downy beneath (Virginia Tech Forestry Department). It is easy to identify the American Elm because of the leaf's unequal base and its fuzzy underside.
