back to index Red maple Leaf back to index

Red Maple Leaf (Acer rubrum).  Red Maple leaves are 3 to 5 lobed, with shallow V-shaped notches between the lobes.  The underside of the leaves is white.  During the growing season, leaves are green, and in the fall they turn red.  They have a high toxicity rating, but only horses are known to be affected by their toxicity.  The ingestion of wilted or fallen leaves causes massive destruction of red blood cells, and the blood can no longer carry sufficient oxygen (Cooperative Extension Service, Purdue University).
