Northern Flicker Nesting Cavity. The Northern Flicker (Colaptes auratus) is a large woodpecker with a length between 10.5 and 11 inches.  Northern Flickers are the "anteaters" of the bird world.  They feed on the ground, frequenting lawns and leaf litter.  They have a brown back and wings which are barred with black, as well as a black crescent on its upper breast.  Their beige breast and belly are spotted heavily with black.  In flight, they have an obvious white rump and yellow under the wings in the Eastern U.S. (USGS).
