back to index Eastern Box Turtle back to index

Eastern Box Turtle. This is the only turtle in New Jersey which can completely close into its shell. This is a male turtle, which usually have red eyes and a depression in the rear portion of the plastron (bottom shell). Box turtles will live their entire life within an area the size of one to two football fields. If you see a box turtle trying to cross the street, put him on the side he wanted to get to and don't take him home with you. Moving them out of their habitat disorients them and they will not reproduce, etc.
