Eastern Red-backed Salamander (Plethodon cinereus). A Red-backed Salamander is characterized by a red stripe that begins right below its head and follows down (in a pretty straight line) all the way to the tip of its tail.  If you find this salamander, then you know the area is healthy and not polluted.
