Quaking Aspen. The quaking aspen was named for the sound it makes- The leaves make a quaking, or thuder-like sound when the wind blows. "Quaking Aspen, also called Smalltooth or Trembling Aspen, and "popple" by lumbermen, has two other distinctions: it grows on a greater variety of sites than any other species of tree in North America and has by far the most widespread range" (Newton).
