Black Gum Tree (Nyssa sylvatica). This hardwood may grow up to 75-80 feet tall and live for 400 years. Branches generally grow perpendicular to the trunk, which varies in color from reddish brown to steel gray. "This tree is known for its glossy dark green summer foliage and outstanding autumn foliage colors" although the leaves may be lighter and less glossy with soils of alkaline pH (Ohio Department of Natural Resources).
