Back NORTHERN SHORT-TAILED SHREW Next

Northern Short-tailed Shrew (Blarina brevicauda).  This small mammal feeds on many small creatures including insects, spiders, worms, toads, small snakes, and mice.  It has poisonous saliva, which helps it to kill small animals or to paralyze invertebrates for later consumption.  Shrews have a high metabolic rate which allows them to stay warm in winter.  They must constantly refuel themselves, and may eat more than half their body weight per day.  They have poor eyesight but good senses of smell and hearing.  They also find their way and locate food with their whiskers.
