back Black Swallowtail Next

Black Swallowtail (Papilio polyxenes). This is one of the four species of black swallowtails found in the tri-state area. From the underside, the Black Swallowtail looks much like the Spicebush Swallowtail, both of which have two rows of orange/yellow spots, however there is a small additional spot on the hindwing of the Black Swallowtail (Glassberg 24).  From above, the Black Swallowtail has two rows of yellow spots whereas the Spicebush Swallowtail has only one.
