back to index Green Heron

Green Heron (Butorides virescens).  The Green Heron is a small, short-legged, short-necked heron with a length of 14 inches and a wingspan of 25 inches.  They have a blue-gray back and wings, a chestnut neck, white chin, and a white stripe down the center of their neck.  The birds slowly crouch and wait for food to come by, occasionally dropping small objects like twigs or insects onto the water to entice small fish.  When a fish does arrive, the heron quickly spears it using its neck like a javelin shaft.
