Spicebush Swallowtail Butterfly (Papilo troilus).  There are four species of black swallowtail butterflies in our area.  This is the Spicebush Swallowtail, which has two rows of orange spots on its hindwing.  It likes open woodlands and borders and its caterpillars’ major food sources are Sassafras and Spicebush (Glassberg 26).
