Bark beetles.  Bark beetles (Family Curculionidae, true weevils; subfamily Scolytinae) lay eggs under bark.  As the larvae hatch, they chew the wood and leave trails that are sometimes appreciated for their aesthetic qualities and have found their way into furniture and artwork.
