Multiflora Rose. The end of a branch of multiflora rose (Rosa multiflora).  Multiflora rose is invasive, and this individual is infected with rose rosette disease, a virus that causes this bizarre red branching pattern.  The virus is carried by a microscopic mite, and it virus has been investigated as a biological control for multiflora rose.  However, multiflora has reproduced more quickly than the virus can, and also the virus infects cultivated roses as well as multiflora.
