Birding Programs & Trips
Grab your binoculars and joining us for a birding adventure!
Birding Programs and Trips

The following bird trips are run by Tom Sheppard, Chief Park Naturalist.  Tom and his colleagues focus on helping all participants learn about the birds and teach them about interesting characteristics of each species.  They will also point out other natural history information about the different areas the group is visiting.  Please pack a lunch, as stops are not guaranteed.  If you have your own binoculars or spotting scope, please feel free to bring them.  Binoculars are available for loan.  Trips are designed for adults, but mature youths under 18 can contact Tom for approval.  Please dress appropriately for the weather.  Transportation is by County Park vans.  All trips meet at the County Arboretum.  Trips are recommended for any interested birder

Departure: Saturday, May 19 at 6:30 AM
Return: Sunday, May 20 at approximately 4:00 PM
Cost: $125 (limit of 8 people on this trip)

Join us for a trip around the far side of the Delaware Bay.  We leave early to ensure passage on the 11 o’clock Cape May Ferry.  Participants should pack a lunch or will need to purchase lunch on the ferry.  Once away from port we will spend time birding from the ferry as we cross the bay to Lewes, DE.  Once in Delaware, we will spend the rest of the afternoon birding in Prime Hook NWR before checking into the hotel.  Once checked in, we’ll do some inland birding before picking a restaurant for a late dinner.  The next morning, we will enjoy a continental breakfast and head out for Bombay Hook NWR to finish off our bay excursion.  We will then head for home with a stop for lunch on the way. Note:  While participants do not have to be expert birders, they should understand basic birding skills.  Therefore, participants need to have been on two previous birding excursions.  Limited seating is available; participants need to limit themselves to one bag for their personal belongings, not counting scopes or binoculars.

Sussex County Birds
Date: Saturday, June 2
Time: 5:00 AM to 2:00 PM
Cost: $25

Most participants on Sussex trips of years past consider this destination one of the best.  With potential birds like Canada and Cerulean Warblers, Pileated Woodpeckers, and Northern Ravens, it is easy to see why.  Sussex County is just great for northern nesting birds.  We will be visiting portions of Stokes State Forest and High Point State Park.  Moderate to difficult walking required.  PLEASE NOTE THE EARLY START, which will put us in the field at prime time for birding.

The male Bobolink looks like it is wearing a tuxedo backward.  We will look for this fascinating species and other breeding birds of Hunterdon County on our July bird trip.

Breeding Birds of Hunterdon County
Date: Sunday, July 8
Time: 6:00 AM to Noon

Hunterdon has a rich variety of nesting birds.  Last year we went through the western edge of the county.  Prior to this trip, we will scout some of the best spots in the County, such as Hoffman Park, Spruce Run Reservoir, and Voorhees State Park.  However, the route of the trip may change up to the last moment depending on reports and findings.  We will hope to see Bobolinks, a variety of warblers, and more.  Two miles of hiking may be required.

Thursday Morning / Tuesday Afternoon Bird Walks

Take an early morning stroll or an afternoon walk with the interpretive staff of the County Parks Department as we look for the spring migrants and local breeding birds of the county.  We will use both eyes and ears to determine which birds are in abundance, as well as to observe other signs of the spring season.  This is a great chance to brush up on your song identification skills.  Binoculars are available to borrow.

PLANNING YOUR CANOE TRIP PRE-REGISTRATION: Required by the Wednesday before the trip, unless otherwise noted.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to water levels or other circumstances beyond our control it may be necessary to choose an alternative river. Leaders may make this change at any time in order to provide a safe and fun experience.

CANCELLATIONS: If we cancel the trip for any reason we will call you as soon as the determination has been made. You have the option of rescheduling or a full refund. Our trips run rain or shine!

WE SUPPLY: the canoe, gear, training, transportation and experienced leaders to guide you. Please bring lunch, a drink, and a big smile.

AGES: Most trips are appropriate for children ages 8 and older, accompanied by an adult. Please check with us about specific trips so we can verify age appropriateness.

A professional Park Naturalist will guide the children during hikes as they discover the diverse field, forest, and pond habitats at Echo Hill or Mountain Farm. Other hands-on activities include science experiments, field games, and take-home craft projects. SUMMER NATURE CAMPS
Our Summer Nature Camp Program is an opportunity for kids entering kindergarten through grade 10 to connect with and explore the natural world.  Program leaders facilitate hands-on activities that foster kids’ innate curiosity about nature and wildlife.  Campers and parents alike rave about camp, making it one of the Parks Department’s most popular offerings.

Leaders for the Summer Nature Program are instructed in guiding children outdoors and are certified in First Aid and CPR.  Group size is a maximum of 10-12 campers depending on session & location, with each leader being aided by an assistant or volunteer.  Special canoeing instructors host the paddling clinics and canoe trips with our older campers.

Sessions are available at both Echo Hill and the Mountain Farm Section of Teetertown Nature Preserve.  Echo Hill is located on Lilac Drive, in Clinton Township, less than 15 minutes from both Clinton and Flemington.  Mountain Farm is located on Pleasant Grove Road in Lebanon Township, about 15 minutes northwest of Clinton.  Both sites offer wonderful and diverse habitats for the campers to explore, including stream, pond, field, and forest areas.

Note that camp is held Monday through Friday—no weekends.  Camp will be held on Wednesday, July 4th, Independence Day.

Annual Trails Day Volunteer Opportunity

Volunteers at last year’s Trails Day installed water bars at Round Mountain.  This year we need help fixing up our parks after the fall storms.
Volunteers at the 2011 Trails Day Event at Round Mountain

Former Parks Planner Bill Clother (now retired) shows us how to build a water bar.
Retired Park Ranger Bill Clother

Date: Saturday, June 9, 2012
Time: 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM
Location:  Mt. Farm Section of Teetertown Preserve
Age: 12 through adult

The Hunterdon County Department of Parks & Recreation is looking for interested participants for our Annual Trails Day Event on Saturday, June 9, 2012.  This year’s trails day will focus on repairing storm damage to the  Blue Trail at the Mt. Farm section of the Teetertown Preserve.

We are asking volunteers to meet us at the Nature & Activity Center located at 40 Pleasant Grove Road, in Port Murray at 8:30am.

The Blue Trail has an area where there is an underground stream and the trail above it is starting to wash away. We will be putting in a “bog bridge,” (two flat topped logs) over this area to make it safe to use. The crew will need to prepare the logs by removing bark, digging holes and notching the logs to fit together. The Parks Department will do the big cutting before we start. The day of the event we will be using only hand tools. We will also be upgrading the stream crossing and possibly putting in a sitting area near the stream which has some little water falls.

Some tools will be provided at the site.  However, we would appreciate any effort on your part to bring shovels and/or handsaws.  No power tools please. It is important that you wear a pair of tough gloves and sturdy boots.  We will provide safety glasses.

Volunteers may work a couple of hours, or until 12:30pm.  Unless the weather is hazardous, we will be working rain or shine.  We will contact all pre-registered volunteers by phone if we are forced to cancel, or you can call (908) 782-1158. We will have coffee, tea, and donuts available at the day’s start and a picnic lunch will also be free to all volunteers.  Please bring plenty of water in a container to carry as you work.

For more information and to obtain registration information contact our office at (908)782-1158.  If you have specific questions about the event, contact Recreation Leader, Patrick Eckard, at peckard@co.hunterdon.nj.us
