NOTE: Tours begin every 30 minutes and last about 1 hour.
Native Americans discovered the sweet quality of sugar maple sap before written history. For hundreds, maybe even thousands of years, Native Americans would set up camp in a stand of sugar maples during the sap run. The sugar they produced was an important food for them and for the colonists, who learned the process from the Native Americans. It was only during the 1930s when maple sugar took the form we use today: syrup!
Experience first-hand the North American tradition of maple sugaring at Hunterdon County’s Maple Sugaring Program. You’ll take a trip through time to experience the art of the sugaring process. Along the way you will visit a sugar “farmer” at his evaporator, see an early American Frontiersman taping his trees and enjoy a local Native American legend about the discovery of maple sap. At the end of your walk everyone will get a free taste of our very own Hunterdon County maple syrup on a silver dollar pancake.

SQUARE DANCE LESSONS
Dates: Ten Sundays, February 21 to May 9
Time: 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM
Location: Echo Hill Lodge
Cost: $50 per person
Square dancing is the official folk dance of the State of New Jersey and it gives people the opportunity to gather, spend time with a warm and friendly group, meet new friends and get some low impact, aerobic exercise all at the same time. What a great way to keep mentally and physically fit!
Ed Kerns, professional caller and instructor will join us once again in providing square dance lessons this spring. Mr. Kerns has taught hundreds of people to square dance in an enjoyable, fun-filled setting. He currently calls at many dances for our Hunterdon Flutterwheels Square Dance Club.
The instructor begins with the more simple “calls,” and then progresses on to those of more complexity, stressing repetition and review for ease of learning. The course provides a good understanding of what square dancing is all about and is offered in a fun, supportive and good-hearted manner by Mr. Kerns. After completing the lessons, graduates will be able to join in many of the regular square dances offered in our area. Pre-registration is required.

BATTY ABOUT BATS

Location: Echo Hill
Age: 8 through adult (Children must be accompanied by an adult.)
Cost: $3 per person
Bat species around the world are on the decline, yet they play an important part in the ecosystem. Bats have unjustly been stereotyped as blood-sucking, human-attacking creatures of the night. That is the furthest thing from the truth. They help pollinate some the world’s most important crops. In Hunterdon County, our bats are insectivores and prey on mosquitoes, gnats, and other bugs. Break the normal mold of thinking and learn about these fascinating creatures of the night. At the end of the program we will take a short walk to the pond to see if any of these nighttime flyers are out.

The word “planets” comes from the Latin word “plantesmos” meaning “wandering star.” We will start at 8:00 PM in an attempt to view three of the five visible planets before they set for the evening: Venus, Mars, and Saturn. After this we will look for some of the seasonal constellations as the sky darkens. By the end of the program the Moon and Jupiter should be high enough in the eastern sky for viewing.
Note: This program may be cancelled or postponed if cloudy conditions are present.

SPRING SERIES FOR KIDS
Our popular seasonal series will introduce your child to many exciting nature topics. A professional Park Naturalist will guide the children during hikes as they discover the diverse field, forest, and pond habitats at Echo Hill. Other hands-on activities include science experiments, field games, and take-home craft projects. The children will be able to observe the subtle changes from week to week as we progress through the season. Through our explorations, children will also hone their attention to detail as we observe the colors, shapes, textures, and sounds of the natural world.
Please be sure to dress your child for the outdoors so that the whole group will be able to enjoy our lessons fully. We strongly recommend old clothes and sneakers/boots that can get dirty. Nature Clubs meet rain or shine. In inclement weather, we shorten our outdoor adventures to spend more time in the Lodge.
IMPORTANT REGISTRATION INFORMATION:
For each child, a registration form must be completed and signed by a parent or guardian. Included on the form are the date of last tetanus shot, known allergies, and special care notes; please have this information ready. Each session is limited to eight children to ensure a quality experience for the participants. The Department of Parks and Recreation reserves the right to cancel any session due to low enrollment, and give a full refund.

BOMBAY HOOK, DELAWARE
Date: Saturday, April 17
Time: 5:30 AM to 6:00 PM
Cost $35
Guest Leader: Dave Womer of Back Into Nature, Inc.
Dave Womer is a trained field ornithologist with over 25 years of birding experience. He has competed in national birding tournaments such as the Great Texas Birding Classic and the World Series of Birding, and mentored a youth team.
With over 15,000 acres of preserved habitat, predominately tidal salt marsh, Bombay Hook is a key refuge for migratory shorebirds. Possible sightings include Black-necked Stilts, American Avocets, and Wilson’s Phalaropes. Bombay Hook was established in 1937 as a link in the chain of refuges that extend from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico, and its value to wildlife has grown as the surrounding habitat has been lost to development. Please note the early departure time; participants are welcome to sleep on the drive to Bombay Hook.

We will start early on Saturday morning in the dark and search for singing Whip-poor-will and Chuck-will’s Widow. After breakfast we will begin birding many of Cape May’s birding treasures along the bayside and stop at one of the Audubon Centers before returning to Belleplain. Sunday, we will head down to Cape May Island and visit Higbee and other locations. Cost covers transportation and housing; food will need to be provided by the participant.
Note: This will be a fast-paced trip, and while participants do not have to be expert birders, they should understand basic birding skills. SUSSEX COUNTY BIRDS

SCHEDULE YOUR OWN TRIP
We are happy to tailor a canoe trip to the needs of your group, school, club,
charity, or service organization. Give us a call.
PLANNING YOUR CANOE TRIP PRE-REGISTRATION: Required by the Wednesday before the trip, unless otherwise noted.
PLEASE NOTE: Due to water levels or other circumstances beyond our control it may be necessary to choose an alternative river. Leaders may make this change at any time in order to provide a safe and fun experience.
CANCELLATIONS: If we cancel the trip for any reason we will call you as soon as
the determination has been made. You have the option of rescheduling or a full refund.
Our trips run rain or shine!
WE SUPPLY: the canoe, gear, training, transportation and experienced leaders to guide you. Please bring lunch, a drink, and a big smile.
AGES: Most trips are appropriate for children ages 8 and older, accompanied by an adult. Please check with us about specific trips so we can verify age appropriateness.
WHAT TO WEAR: We suggest dressing in layers so you can adjust to changing temperatures. Durable old clothes are the best; wool keeps you warm even if wet and polypropylene fleece dries quickly. Cotton is not a good material for cool, wet outdoor activities. Sneakers are recommended; please no sandals, boots, or heavy shoes. Wool socks are best for cold weather. A bathing suit can be worn – sometimes we go swimming.
WHAT TO BRING ON DAYTRIPS: Lunch and a drink (packed in waterproof container), lots of water to drink, a rain jacket, a hat, eyeglass strap, etc. In chilly weather a complete change of clothing can be packed in a waterproof bag to be carried in your canoe or to be in the van for the trip’s end.
NOTES: No alcoholic beverages are permitted on our trips. No pets are allowed, except for guide animals.
KAYAKS: Please call ahead to make arrangements. You may bring your own kayak, at your own risk. We can accommodate a few kayaks on many of our trips, but please check with us ahead of time. (908)782-1158.
If you have any questions or would like to be added to our canoe trip announcment e-list, please do not hesitate to give us a call weekdays at 908.782.1158 or email Recreation Leader Liz Fulmer at lfulmer@co.hunterdon.nj.us |
