In 1914, Samuel Buck, Superintendent of Taylor-Wharton Iron & Steel Company, acquired seven acres of land on this site to be used as a district campsite for Boy Scout Troop 149 of High Bridge. Merit badges at the camporees were awarded in cooking, camping, first aid, public health, woodcarving, fishing, and handicrafts. Samuel Buck was also the Troop's first Scoutmaster and recipient of the Council's Silver Beaver Award. At the time of his death at age 63 in 1937, he was Vice President of Taylor-Wharton. The camp was named "Camp Buck" in his honor. In 1946, the Troop was transferred from the Pennsylvania Council to the George Washington Council of the Boy Scouts of America. The County acquired 41 acres of the site in 1975 as part of the South Branch Reservation.
Today, the South Branch Reservation totals over 1,000 acres. Besides offering recreational opportunities, the reservation helps preserve the South Branch of the Raritan River Watershed and protects wildlife habitat.
