Wings Section - Part of the South Branch Reservation - Guide and Trail Map

ABOUT THE WOODFERN SECTION

The Woodfern Section of the South Branch Reservation consists of 24 acres that contains a flat 3/4 mile trail. This trail was once the South Branch Railroad, which ran from Somerville to Flemington and was completed in 1864. It merged with the Central Railroad of NJ in 1888 and became known as the South Branch Line after that. It was abandoned in 1957.

The County acquired most of the land that makes up the South Branch Reservation in 1975. The parcels of Woodfern next to the river and the island were acquired in 1996, and the old rail bed was added in 2004. Today, the South Branch Reservation totals over 1000 acres. Besides providing recreational opportunities, the reservation helps preserve the South Branch of the Raritan River Watershed and provides habitat for wildlife.

OTHER COUNTY PARK AREAS

  • Deer Path Park: Our main developed park facility; Deer Path offers pavilions, a picnic grove, and a 2.5-mile running trail for public use. Trail linkage also exists with the Round Mountain Section of Deer Path Park.
  • Assiscong Marsh: Par t of the South Branch Reservation and the largest freshwater marsh in the County. This location offers wonderful viewing opportunities of resident and migratory waterfowl and shorebirds. Parking is in a small lot just off of River Road.

See the guides for these locations to obtain more information about the sites

TRAIL AND GUIDE INFORMATION

Woodfern is an easy trail where visitors can look for and listen to wildlife. The vernal pools along the railroad tracks that develop in the spring provide habitat for breeding frogs and toads. The hardwood forest is a good place for migrating and breeding birds, such as Wood Thrush, Black-throated Blue Warbler, and Common Yellowthroat.

Trail Guides are set up with the brochure on one side, and the map on the other.  The brochure and map can be printed on standard 8 ½ x 11” paper.
