Arches SectionABOUT THE RIVERFIELD SECTION
of The South Branch Reservation

Along a bend in the South Branch of the Raritan River lie 26 acres of woods and an open field that was once cultivated for agricultural purposes. From 1925 to 1970, Riverfield was owned by Philip and Minnie Moebus and their son. In 1983, the land was sold to Alan and Ingela Levett, residents of Green
Brook. They had a passion for animals and exercised their dogs on the property. Ingela (1945-2008) was the founder and president of Rawhide Rescue, Inc., a non-profit volunteer group that rescued and found homes for over 2,000 unwanted canines. They sold the property to Hunterdon County in 1997.

The circular trail at Riverfield, almost 3/4 mile, was created in May 2010 by volunteers during the Division’s annual Trails Day.

With an elevation that averages 200 feet above sea level, the land gently slopes towards the river, affording scenic views for hikers and fishermen alike.

Birds on the property include orioles, woodpeckers, wrens, catbirds, bluebirds, and red-tailed hawks. Groundhogs, chipmunks, and other mammals also make their home there. A diversity of wildflowers, including milkweed, attract many species of butterflies and other insects. The forest is dominated by sycamores, maples, ashes, and hickories.

RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

HUNTING Hunting is permitted to control the deer population. Hunters must obtain a special permit issued by the Division. Visitors during hunting season are strongly encouraged to wear blaze orange or confine visits to Sundays. See more information about the County's Controlled Hunting Program, click here....

FISHING For fishermen, the river is stocked with Rainbow, Brook, and Brown Trout. A state fishing license with a trout stamp must be displayed.

With the exception of park properties with reservable facilities, all properties are “carry in / carry out” and trash/recycling receptacles are
not provided. Please plan accordingly and do not leave any trash/recyclables behind.

The Hunterdon County Parks and Recreation Division is dedicated to preserving open space and natural resources, providing safe parks and facilities, and offering educational and recreational opportunities, all contributing to an enhanced quality of life for present and future generations.
